Dallas Dhu reopens for production?

Dallas Dhu reopens for production?

2017 was the year when many closed distilleries officially announced to restart production within near future.

2018 starts off with new information regarding Dallas Dhu surfacing. Discussions are finally going to take place to decide upon Dallas Dhu’s future. Dallas Dhu is Scotland’s only historical distillery and it’s being used today as a museum, it’s also on of the most visited tourist attractions in the Speyside area.

MSP Richard Lochhead has for several years been the driving force to evolve and develop Dallas Dhu, he’s also behind the suggestions now being discussed between Cabinet Secretary Fiona Hyslop and Historic Environment Scotland who are responsible for the site today.

MSP Richard Lochheads said :

”Dallas Dhu is wonderfully unique in that it is Scotland’s only historic distillery and it is a site that has a huge amount of potential not only to restart production of a famous whisky but to play wider roles in the Scotch whisky sector.”

The discussion to restart production started in 2016 when Diageo informed they have no objection to the restart of whisky production at Dallas Dhu if Historic Environment Scotland opted to do so. However, it’s now in 2018 proper discussions will take place to realize the bold new plans. Suggestions have also been made to make Dallas Dhu the home to a new National Centre for Whisky Excellence.

Dallash Dhu was closed for production in 1983 by Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd, today Diageo, when cuts was made to production. Brora, Port Ellen and Rosebank were other distilleries being closed during these times. All of these distilleries will be restarted once again according to Diageo’s decisions in 2017. Benromach and Bladnoch are two distilleries that already have been reopened.
